MARILYN MANSON

Marylin Manson
Marilyn Manson Overview:

Marilyn Manson is both the name of a rock band and its frontman, but whichever of the two entities you’re referring to, it is a moniker associated with controversial, sometimes shocking hard rock and metal music. In the 1990s, Manson was a lightning rod for conservative watchdog groups, and he reveled in his skill at pushing the envelope. The downside to Manson’s provocative album covers and bizarre appearance was that his songs often took a backseat to his outrageous persona, but in terms of continuing rock ‘n’ roll’s tradition of offending authority, he was one of the art form’s most memorable troublemakers.

Marilyn Manson's Origins:

Born Brian Warner in 1969, Marilyn Manson created his stage name as a combination of two celebrities’ names: Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson. When he was 18, Manson moved from Ohio to Florida, becoming interested in forming a rock band. The band was briefly called Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids before simply going by the name Marilyn Manson. The personnel would continue to shift throughout the band’s career, with Manson being the one constant in the lineup.

A 'Portrait' of Things to Come:

After attracting the interest of Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, Marilyn Manson signed with Reznor’s Nothing record label. In 1994, the band released their first album, Portrait of an American Family. The band had already established its extreme onstage persona – male musicians performing in dresses, handmade pyrotechnics – and Portrait had the same mixture of shock and silliness. Overseen by Reznor, the album was full of metal rumblings, but the songs were more calculating than legitimately disturbing. Portrait was a cult item at the time, setting the stage for Marilyn Manson’s more successful provocations to come.

Becoming the 'Antichrist Superstar':

The 1995 outtakes collection Smells Like Children helped raise Marilyn Manson’s profile when his creepy cover of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” became a radio hit. A year later, Manson capitalized on that notoriety with Antichrist Superstar, a confident tour of goth, industrial and metal styles that superbly merged sensationalism and songwriting. Led by the sneering single “The Beautiful People,” Antichrist Superstar quickly went platinum and confirmed that he was the new boogieman of popular music, replacing aging shock-rockers like Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne.

Going Androgynous for 'Mechanical Animals':

Forever the chameleon, Marilyn Manson wasn’t content to sit tight after Antichrist Superstar. Breaking ranks with his mentor Trent Reznor, Manson returned in 1998 with Mechanical Animals, another shocking record but in completely different ways than its predecessor. Recreating himself as an androgynous alien, the Manson of Mechanical Animals evoked the 1970s glam-rock of David Bowie for a series of songs about decadence that was sonically more accessible than Antichrist’s darker textures, leading to his first No. 1 album. He was a pariah among conservative groups, but his cultural status was at an all-time high.

The Backlash Begins:
By the time Marilyn Manson released 2000’s Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death), a backlash had started to form against him. The 1999 Columbine shooting led to complaints that “evil” groups such as Marilyn Manson had contributed to the teenagers’ homicidal tendencies. Manson’s popularity never fully recovered, and while Holy Wood received positive reviews, it failed to attract audiences in the same amounts as his previous records had.

A Decline in Popularity:

Three years after Holy Wood, Manson returned with The Golden Age of Grotesque, his second No. 1 album. Despite that achievement, Golden Age continued Marilyn Manson’s downward commercial spiral. No matter what guises he tried, Manson simply wasn’t able to reclaim the shock novelty of his best ‘90s records. Ironically, his next record, Eat Me, Drink Me, proved to be an artistic comeback, ending up as one of 2007’s best rock albums. Unfortunately, many of his earlier fans seemed less interested with his more recent musical exploits.

'The High End of Low':

In February 2009, Marilyn Manson announced that his next album would be called The High End of Low. The title, according to Manson, referred to “a self-described state of being that I’m in.” The first single was “I Want to Kill You Like They Do in the Movies.” The High End of Low was released on May 26, 2009, after which Marilyn Manson prepared to headline the summer-long Rockstar Mayhem Festival.

Essential Marilyn Manson Album:

Antichrist Superstar

A feast of horror-show theatrics, Antichrist Superstar borrowed a page from Marilyn Manson’s champion, Trent Reznor – it’s impossible to listen to this album without thinking of the profound influence The Downward Spiral had on it. (This makes sense, of course, since Reznor helped produce Antichrist.) But Manson’s ability to craft ghoulish vocals helps create an otherworldly persona that feels truly demented and amoral. Bouncing around from new wave to metal, Antichrist Superstar is high-grade performance art. Even if you’re too old to get freaked out by Marilyn Manson’s shenanigans, this album remains his most musically captivating.

John Bonham (Led Zeppelin Drummer)

John Bonham
John Bonham, or "Bonzo" as he was also known, was drummer for the rock super-group Led Zeppelin, possibly the greastest rock band ever. Not only that, John is himself considered to be one of, if not the the greatest rock drummers ever.

When people think of John, they often think of his powerful and creative drumming style, great bass drum technique, and big open drum sound.

There was a furious and intense energy about his playing that was matched with a great feel. His style has been imitated and sampled by countless drummers and recording artists over the years. The reason? His playing was original, unique, and it totally kicked ass!

John Bonham had always wanted to be a drummer from an early age, and he had amazing success with Zeppelin, but his life wasn't without it's downsides. He had a problem with alcohol that plauged him from the early days with the band, and it ultimately contributed to his early death.

John is still a drumming mega-star many years after his death and has countless fans worldwide including many of today's top pros.

RED HOT CHILI PAPPERS

RHCP
Red Hot Chili Peppers' Origins:

Red Hot Chili Peppers struggled through the ‘80s, but eventually became one of the most celebrated rock groups of the ‘90s and early 21st century. The band confronted tragedy, personnel changes and addiction, but their template of punk, funk and pop is as recognizable as any in contemporary rock. The band formed in the early ‘80s in Los Angeles, with Anthony Kiedis on vocals, Michael Balzary (later going by Flea) on bass, Hillel Slovak on guitar, and Jack Irons on drums. After initially calling themselves Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, they changed their moniker to Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Lineup Changes and Early Struggles:

On the eve of recording their debut album, Slovak and Irons departed to concentrate on another band they were involved with. Lacking two of the group's core members, 1984’s The Red Hot Chili Peppers was an unpromising debut. Even when Slovak rejoined the group for the follow-up, 1985’s Freaky Styley, the band’s trademark meshing of different genres still felt unfocused. Like with their debut, Freaky Styley failed to garner much chart attention.

Getting Their Act Together:

Before work began on the band’s third album, Irons returned to the group. 1987’s The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, the first to include all four original group members, started to solidify the sonic playbook Red Hot Chili Peppers would continue to explore throughout their career. A mixture of funk and rock, The Uplift Mofo Party Plan offered a livelier, looser approach to ‘80s hard rock. And with their funky cover of Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” Anthony Kiedis started a RHCP tradition of goosing a classic rock staple with their trademark sound.

Tragedy:

The Uplift Mofo Party Plan had been more commercially successful than the group’s first two records, but there would be problems elsewhere in the group. Slovak, who had been suffering from drug addiction, died in 1988 of an overdose. Slovak’s death prompted the permanent departure of Irons, who would much later become the drummer for Pearl Jam for a brief time. Once again, the band was in need of a guitarist and drummer.

Flirting With the Mainstream:

In preparation for the follow-up to The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, the band hired guitarist John Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith, releasing Mother’s Milk in 1989. Mother’s Milk highlighted the sensual allure of the group’s funk and rock, even producing a hit on the mainstream rock charts with their cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground.” The album eventually went double platinum and set the stage for the band’s later worldwide success.

Finding Commercial and Creative 'Magik':

Signing to Warner Bros. records, Red Hot Chili Peppers recorded Blood Sugar Sex Magik with respected producer Rick Rubin. Released in ’91, the album trimmed away the indulgences of past RHCP albums, focusing the group’s many sonic influences into accessible rock songs. Blood Sugar Sex Magik produced four singles that demonstrated the album’s range, from the pop ballad “Under the Bridge” to the funk rocker “Give It Away.” Kiedis rapped, sang and crooned on Blood Sugar Sex Magik, displaying a real depth and vulnerability while remaining a horny, charismatic frontman.

A Revolving Door of Guitarists:

Sadly, although Blood Sugar Sex Magik was their biggest hit to that point, selling more than 7 million copies in the U.S., the band continued to have lineup problems. Frusciante left the group, resulting in former Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro filling the spot. 1995’s One Hot Minute emulated Blood Sugar’s ability to merge maturity and bad-boy attitude, although it lacked that album’s distinctive singles. Not as critically admired as Blood Sugar, One Hot Minute was nonetheless a sizable hit in its own right, helped by the acoustic ballad “My Friends.”

A Bid for Maturity:

By the time of their next album, 1999’s Californication, Navarro had left the group and Frusciante had returned. Viewed as a comeback after One Hot Minute, Californication deemphasized the band’s funk influences and instead leaned toward pop and rock. By this point, Red Hot Chili Peppers had a firm grasp on writing mid-tempo songs that sounded good on the radio, and Californication had two such winners in “Scar Tissue” and the title track. Whereas before the band celebrated their raucous lifestyles, Californication seemed to regard the hedonism with a twinge of sadness and regret.

Still Red Hot in the 21st Century:

With their lineup unchanged, Red Hot Chili Peppers have continued their win streak from the 1990s into the new century. 2002’s By the Way and 2006’s Stadium Arcadium adhered closely to Californication’s eclectic musicianship and introspective lyrics. Together, the two albums sold a combined 17 million copies worldwide. Not only was the band's commercial standing exceptionally high, Stadium Arcadium went on to earn six Grammy nominations, including one for Album of the Year.

'I'm With You':

By the time Red Hot Chili Peppers released their next album, 2011’s I’m With You, a major personnel change had occurred. Longtime guitarist John Frusciante had left the band, paving the way for new member Josh Klinghoffer. In advance of I’m With You’s release, the band unveiled the first single, “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie.”

Current Members:

Flea - bass
Anthony Kiedis - lead vocals
Josh Klinghoffer - guitars
Chad Smith - drums

Essential Red Hot Chili Peppers:

Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ first commercial blockbuster paved the way for the sound and thematic direction the band would take for the rest of their career. Much of the band’s best material seeks to find an equilibrium between the raucousness of youth and the wisdom of adulthood, and Blood Sugar Sex Magik bounces, crashes and soars because of that internal tension.

SECONHAND SERENADE

secondhand serenade
Secondhand Serenade's song "Fall for You" has made a slow but steady climb up the pop singles chart throughout the spring and summer. However, what do you, as a pop fan, know about John Vesely, the man behind the song? Learn more in the profile of Secondhand Serenade.

What Is Secondhand Serenade?

Secondhand Serenade is the name of John Vesely's primarily solo musical project. It follows in the tradition of John Ondrasik's Five for Fighting. Vesely's first recordings as Secondhand Serenade consisted of simply his solo acoustic guitar and vocals. However, more recent work includes the presence of a full band.

The name Secondhand Serenade is an autobiographical one. According to John Vesely most of his songs are originally sung to his wife as serenades. Music fans hear them only secondhand. Hence the name Secondhand Serenade.
John Vesely's Early Career:

John Vesely is the son of a Czech immigrant who spent more than 20 years as a professional jazz musician. He began his musical career as a journeyman bass player in the San Francisco Bay area. After meeting his wife, Vesely switched to the acoustic guitar and began writing songs. In an interview with Zero Mag, he said his future wife wanted him to play her a song and "serenading her with a bass guitar was out of the question."
MySpace Success and 'Awake':

John Vesely recorded Awake, his first solo album as Secondhand Serenade, in 2005. It was promoted on MySpace. In 2006 Secondhand Serenade became the #1 Independent Artist on MySpace. His songs were played millions of times through the site. Record labels soon came calling and Secondhand Serenade signed a contract with Glassnote Records, a newly formed label distributed through Warner Brothers.

Awake was re-released by Glassnote in January 2007. It landed on the Billboard Top 200 album chart, and included the chart single "Vulnerable." Vesely promoted the album with extensive touring and TV appearances.

A Twist In My Story':

A Twist In My Story, a second Secondhand Serenade album, appeared in February 2008. It features many songs with a full band backing. The album debuted at #44 on the Billboard album chart and sold 16000 copies in its first week. The single "Fall for You" began a slow rise on pop music charts in the spring slowly picking up pop radio airplay. By summer "Fall For You" was in the pop top 40.

My Chemical Romance came into being in 2001 when vocalist Gerard Way and drummer Matt Pelissier (who would later be asked to leave in August 2004) decided to form a band. Way asked guitarist Ray Toro to join the pair. The lineup of My Chemical Romance became complete when Gerard Way's brother Mikey and Frank Iero joined. The new group began touring around the northeast U.S.

Trivia Fact About My Chemical Romance:

The song "Helena" is about the grandmother of Gerard and Mikey Way. According to Gerard she was an artist who taught him to sing, paint and perform. She bought My Chemical Romance their first van for touring. Her funeral was a formative event in the lives of Gerard and Mikey Way.

First Album:

My Chemical Romance signed with New York-based independent record label Eyeball Records for their first album. I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love was produced by Geoff Rickly, lead vocalist of the group Thursday, and released in 2002. The tone of the album was very dark and the group were frequently compared to Thursday.

'Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge':

In 2003 My Chemical Romance signed a major label contract with Warner Brothers subsidiary Reprise Records. They set to work on a second album. Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge appeared in June 2004. It was designed as a concept album about two lovers who die in a gunfight in the desert. Much of the album's music is relentlessly loud, intense, and fast. The album debuted at #103 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart at the end of June 2004 and began a long, very slow climb up the chart. After more than a year on the album chart it peaked at #28 and was certified platinum with the single "Helena" hitting the pop top 40.

'The Black Parade':

My Chemical Romance had tremendous momentum heading into the release of their next album. The release of The Black Parade was preceded in the fall of 2006 by a well-received performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. The album debuted at #2 on the album chart in both the US and the UK with stellar critical reviews. The single "Welcome to the Black Parade" also hit the top 10 on the pop singles chart. The album is a concept piece about death.

'Danger Days':

My Chemical Romance toured in support of The Black Parade until May 2008 and then the band took a break. In March 2010 the band announced the departure of drummer Bob Bryar. In September the single "Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)" hit radio with a new album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys set to hit stores November 22, 2010.

INCUBUS

Incubus
Incubus Overview:

Incubus brought together hard rock, metal, funk and pop melodies to great success in the first decade of the 21st century. A hit with both modern rock and mainstream audiences, Incubus conquered radio with a series of relationship songs that may have sanded down the band’s rough edges but secured a large fan following. Along the way, Incubus have had four singles reach No. 1 on the Billboard modern rock chart.

Incubus - The Early Days:

Incubus formed in the early 1990s in Calabasas, California. The principal band members all met in high school, led by frontman Brandon Boyd. The band self-released their first album, Fungus Amongus, in 1995. At this early stage, Incubus just sounded like a tired rehash of Rage Against the Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Still, because their funk-metal sound was popular at the time, Incubus managed to land a deal with Sony for the release of their next effort, a 1997 EP entitled Enjoy Incubus.

Dropping 'S.C.I.E.N.C.E.':

Incubus finally made their full-length major-label debut with S.C.I.E.N.C.E., which arrived eight months after Enjoy Incubus. Featuring DJ scratching from onetime band member Gavin Koppell and funk-influenced vocals by Boyd, S.C.I.E.N.C.E. was the band’s most successful record to this point, but that still wasn’t saying much since the band still felt highly generic. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. failed to attract much of an audience and only went gold five years later when Incubus started to become popular thanks to their subsequent albums.

Going for Melody:

Incubus began to establish their identity on 1999’s Make Yourself. Powered by the hit mid-tempo ballad “Drive,” Make Yourself found Incubus writing in a more melodic vein and eschewing some of their previous funk-metal tendencies. Headbangers were disappointed, but the move to a more pop-friendly approach paid off with a growing fan base and an engaging, layered sound. Make Yourself eventually went double platinum and put Incubus on the national map.

Focusing on Relationships:

Incubus continued to build on the momentum created by Make Yourself with their next record, 2001’s Morning View. Now firmly a mainstream rock band, Incubus sang about relationships with a sensitivity often lacking in their peers. Audiences responded, sending Morning View to No. 2 on the Billboard album chart, their best chart performance to that point.

Getting Arty:

Incubus went through a major personnel change after Morning View, as longtime bassist Dirk Lance left the group. Replaced by current bassist Ben Kenney, Incubus returned in 2004 with A Crow Left of the Murder. Produced by Brendan O’Brien, who had worked with Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots, A Crow Left of the Murder represented an attempt by Incubus toward artier, less easily accessible material. The band’s ambitions hardly scared away fans – the album quickly went platinum.

No Signs of Slowing Down:

Teaming again with O’Brien for 2006’s Light Grenades, Incubus opted for a more streamlined approach after the art-rock of A Crow Left of the Murder. In the process, Incubus enjoyed their first No. 1 album. If there was any question of the staying power of this band, Incubus answered those doubts when “Love Hurts” became a huge hit on the modern rock charts two years after Light Grenades had been released, eventually going to No. 1.

'Moments and Melodies':

Incubus released a greatest-hits album, Monuments and Melodies, on June 16, 2009.
'If Not Now, When?':

On July 12, 2011, Incubus returned with their first studio album in five years, If Not Now, When? The lead single was “Adolescents.”

Incubus Lineup:

Brandon Boyd – vocals
Mike Einziger – guitar
Ben Kenney – bass

BLINK 182

Blink 182 Trivia

Blink-182 won a Teen Choice Award, a Blockbuster Music Award, and appeared on the MTV Awards '00 where they performed "All The Small Things" and won Best Group Video. In Europe they received an MTV Europe Award for Best New Act. They performed on Saturday Night Live and the Tonight Show (twice), appeared in American Pie and opened the Billboard Music Awards.

Blink 182 Detailed Biography

Originally known as simply Blink, the trio band was formed near San Diego by Mark Hoppus (b. 15 March 1972, USA; bass/vocals), who had moved to San Diego to study, and Tom DeLonge (b. 13 December 1975, USA; guitar/vocals). Hoppus and DeLonge were joined by drummer Scott Raynor, and began a non-stop gigging schedule on the local punk circuit. They debuted in 1993 with a self-released EP, Fly Swatter. After releasing the album Buddha in 1994, the trio signed to Grilled Cheese/Cargo and released Cheshire Cat the following year which featured several of the songs from the demo tape.

Shortly afterwards the trio were forced to adopt the new moniker Blink-182 following the threat of legal action by an Irish techno outfit already recording as Blink. Despite the enforced name change, the trio's popularity continued to grow owing to support slots with several leading punk bands including No FX and Pennywise, and their ubiquitous presence on the skating and snow boarding scenes. They also developed a reputation for stripping off during live shows. The trio has a penchant for gloriously immature lyrics, crafting great tunes. The third blink-182 LP, Dude Ranch, was released in 1997. Dude Ranch expanded the group's audience and won the attention of major labels. blink-182 wound up signing with MCA, who released the band's fourth album, Enema of the State, in the summer of 1999.

Travis Barker, formerly with the Aquabats, later replaced Raynor. After selling over four million copies of Enema of the State, the trio played on with the limited edition release The Mark, Tom, and Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back) in fall 2000. Barker appeared on the band's major label debut, Enema Of The State, which debuted in the US Top 10 in June 1999 and went on to sell over a million copies in barely two months. The album was helped by two highly catchy hits, "What's My Name Again?" and "All The Small Things". Following the release of a stop-gap live set, the band confirmed the commercial appeal of their scatological punk rock when their fifth album, Take Off Your Pants And Jacket, debuted at the top of the US charts in June 2001.

DeLonge and Barker concurrently enjoyed success as part of Blink-182 soundalikes, Box Car Racer, while the latter also joined Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong in the Transplants. The band also graced the covers of Rolling Stone, Alternative Press (twice), Teen People, Teen and CosmoGirl, just to name a few.

GARY MOORE

GARY MOORE
Born: April 4, 1952 in Belfast, Northern Ireland

Much like his fellow countryman Rory Gallagher, blues-rock guitarist Gary Moore is a respected and commercially-successful artist in Europe while remaining virtually unknown in the United States. A talented guitarist capable of performing fluid jazz licks and screaming blues riffs alike, Moore's career has seen him perform in a diverse range of styles with bands as varied as Thin Lizzy and Colosseum II. It is Moore's blues-rock work that has earned him a growing stateside audience, however, his popularity growing as he continues to plumb the depths of the blues.
Skid Row & the British Blues-Rock Explosion

Born Robert William Gary Moore in Belfast, Ireland, Moore would become known as a musical prodigy, first picking up the guitar when he was eight years old. Moore became interested in rock & roll as a kid after hearing Elvis Presley and, later, the Beatles, and during the mid-1960s as a teenager, he witnessed performers like the Jimi Hendrix Experience and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, which got the young guitarist interested in the blues. Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac would prove to be one of Moore's biggest influences, with Green later mentoring the young guitarist.

Moving to the larger city of Dublin later in the decade, Moore's first band of note was Skid Row, a blues-rock trio that originally featured Phil Lynott on vocals. Moore and Lynott would become fast friends, and the guitarist would later join Lynott's band Thin Lizzy. Thanks to Fleetwood Mac's Green, Skid Row scored a record deal, releasing three albums between 1970 and '73, none of which left much of a mark beyond introducing Moore as a growing six-string talent. The band did have the opportunity to tour the U.S., opening for bands like Mountain and the Allman Brothers.
An Unpredictable Solo Career

With the split-up of Skid Row, Moore formed the Gary Moore Band, releasing the album Grinding Stone in 1973. Moore's solo career would be sidetracked, however, when his friend Lynott asked him to join Thin Lizzy as guitarist Eric Bell's replacement. Moore's tenure in the band would be brief, albeit recurring, as he would fill in for departing guitarists on tour in both 1977 and '78. During this period Moore also became an in-demand session player, lending his talents to recordings by artists like Andrew Lloyd Weber, Rod Argent, and Greg Lake, among others.

In 1975, Moore accepted an invitation to join the prog-oriented jazz-fusion outfit Colosseum II, appearing on three of the band's recordings in 1976 and '77 before resuming his solo career. Moore recorded his sophomore solo album, Back On The Streets, in 1978, scoring an unexpected U.K. Top Ten hit with the song "Parisienne Walkways," on which Lynott shared vocals with Moore. The guitarist would go on to record Black Rose with Thin Lizzy, adding his fiery licks to the classic album, leaving the band for the last time after a falling out with Lynott.
Heavy Metal Thunder

During the 1980s, Moore pursued his solo career in earnest, turning his six-string skills to a harder, heavy metal-styled sound, beginning with the concert recording Live At The Marquee (1981) and continuing through albums like Corridors Of Power (1982) and Victims Of The Future (1983). Moore reunited with Lynott in 1985 for the Run For Cover album, Lynott contributing vocals to two songs, including the U.K. hit "Out In The Fields," which peaked in the Top Five.

After the death of his friend Phil Lynott in early 1986, Moore dedicated his 1987 album Wild Frontier to Lynott. Inspired, in part, by a trip back to Ireland Moore began to expand his musical palette, and there is a definite Celtic flavor to several of the songs. The album would become Moore's biggest U.K. hit to date, spawning an influential hit in "Over the Hills and Far Away," which would later be covered by various metal bands like Finland's Nightwish and Sweden's Thyrfing.
Back To The Blues

Feeling the pressure to produce hit singles and tiring of the restraints of the metal genre, the hard-rocking After The War would be Moore's last metal-oriented release for a decade. Moore would reach back to his roots for 1990's blues-rock masterpiece Still Got The Blues, which featured guest appearances by bluesmen like Albert King and Albert Collins. Enjoying the creative freedom afforded his guitar playing by the blues, Moore would continue in the blues-rock vein with 1992's After Hours, with special guest B.B. King, and 1993's Blues Alive, a collection of live performances.

In 1995, Moore would repay his former mentor's kindness by recording Blues For Greeny, an album of Peter Green covers performed in tribute. After he had left Fleetwood Mac, Green had sold his 1959 Gibson SG guitar to his young protégé, and Moore used the guitar on the tribute album. In 2001, Moore cemented his legacy as a blues-rock legend with Back To The Blues, following with Power of the Blues in 2004, and the critically-acclaimed Bad For You Baby in 2008. In 2009, Eagle Rock Entertainment released the five-disc live Essential Montreux, documenting the guitarist's frequent appearances at the annual festival.

Recommended Albums: Blues-rock fans should look towards Moore's Still Got The Blues and Back To The Blues for evidence of the guitarist's return to the form, while Bad For You Baby showcases an artist still in his prime.

VELVET REVOLVER

Velvet Revolver
Velvet Revolver Overview:

Velvet Revolver are a supergroup that brought together the core musicians from Guns N’ Roses with the lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots for two albums of old-school arena-rock. Their first record, 2004’s Contraband, proved to be a huge success, but tensions within Velvet Revolver eventually came to a head, forcing the departure of frontman Scott Weiland. Currently, the remaining band members are looking for a new lead singer, with an announcement expected shortly.

Velvet Revolver's Origins:

Velvet Revolver at first was the product of three men – guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum. All previously in Guns N’ Roses before tiring of Axl Rose’s desire to push the band toward a more experimental nature, these musicians wanted to form a new band that more closely reflected the spirit of classic rock. Later joined by guitarist Dave Kushner (formerly of Wasted Youth), the group looked for a singer, finally deciding on Scott Weiland, whose regular band, Stone Temple Pilots, was on hiatus.

'Contraband':

Velvet Revolver released their first album, Contraband, in 2004. Expectations were understandably high for this Guns N’ Roses-meets-Stone Temple Pilots collaboration, which fueled the album’s out-of-the-gates success. Contraband went platinum within two months, and two singles, “Fall to Pieces” and “Slither,” went gold. Naturally, reviews drew obvious comparisons between Contraband and the sounds of the band members’ previous groups, but rock audiences appreciated the back-to-basics approach, which emphasized huge riffs and amphitheater-sized attitude.

'Libertad':

Velvet Revolver didn’t release their second album, Libertad, until 2007. Less commercially popular than Contraband, Libertad actually received better reviews than its predecessor due to two factors – the group sounded more like a cohesive unit rather than an amalgam of previous bands, and the songwriting had improved, revealing newfound maturity while still reveling in rock-star theatrics. But these pluses didn’t seem to impress the record-buying public, who perhaps had cooled to the supergroup marketing hook of Velvet Revolver.

Velvet Revolver Lose Their Singer:

Tension within Velvet Revolver between Weiland and the rest of the group had been rumored for most of the band’s career, but that simmering resentment boiled over on March 20, 2008. At a show in Glasgow, Scotland, Weiland announced from the stage that this would be the final Velvet Revolver tour. The rest of the group refuted that claim, and on April 1, it was announced officially that Weiland had left the group. Weiland and his band mates differed on whose decision it was to part ways, but he quickly rejoined Stone Temple Pilots for a reunion tour and new album.

GREEN DAY

Green Day
Formed:
1988 at Pinole Valley High School, Pinole, California.
Members:

Billie Joe Armstrong - Vocals and Guitar
Mike Dirnt - Bass
Tre Cool - Drums
Quote from Vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong:

"You know when people say 'My favorite band is the Who,' and you know they're talking about a classic rock band. Well, I want people to talk about Green Day like that."
Trivia Fact:

The first name of Green Day was Sweet Children.
Early Years:

Green Day emerged out of the Northern California underground punk scene in the late 80's. Their first album 1,039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours was a compilation of three previous released EP's. Shortly after the album was released Tre Cool replaced the band's drummer, John Kiffmeyer, completing the trio that make up the group today. After a second album Kerplunk, released in 1992, the band signed to major record label Reprise.
Dookie:

Dookie was released on Reprise in the spring of 1994. MTV jumped on the video for the album's first single "Longview" shortly after the album was released. The second single "Basket Case" topped the modern rock singles chart for 5 weeks. The band continued to gain commercial momentum and Dookie eventually reached #2 on the pop albums chart and sold 10 million copies. The single "When I Come Around" crossed over to pop radio making Green Day one of the biggest bands in the world.
Insomniac and Decline of Green Day:

The followup album, 1995's Insomniac, was edgier and sold only 2 million copies. Green Day canceled a 1996 tour claiming exhaustion. The next album Nimrod pleased critics but sales were disappointing even though the ballad "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" was a left-field hit.

After a 3 year hiatus, the album Warning was released. It was the most direct pop album the group had released yet but failed to ignite a great deal of excitement. After the greatest hits collection International Superhits appeared in 2001 it looked like the band's glory days were over.
Green Day Become the World's Greatest Rock Band:

Green Day seriously considered breaking up, but instead spent a year working out their issues. After studio tapes for a new album were stolen, the band hastily put together a new album inspired at least in part by Queen's expansive "Bohemian Rhapsody." The result was the anti-Bush rock opera American Idiot released in the fall of 2004. Although the band feared it would be a failure, the album turned out to be a massive success resulting in the trio's first #1 hit album, a Grammy award for rock album of the year, and a #2 pop single "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams." The album ultimately sold over five million copies in the US alone.

Green Day went back to the studio with a new producer, Butch Vig of Garbage, to record a follow up to the massive success of American Idiot. More than 4 1/2 years later 21st Century Breakdown was complete. The first single from the new collection is "Know Your Enemy."

MEGADETH

Megadeth
Early Days:

After being kicked out of Metallica in 1983, guitarist Dave Mustaine started Megadeth. The original lineup included bassist David Ellefson, guitarist Kerry King and drummer Lee Rash. Shortly thereafter Kerry King left for his old band Slayer and was replaced by Chris Poland and Lee Rash was replaced by Gar Samuelson. In 1985 their debut album Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good was released.

Thrash Titans:

The success of their debut drew the attention of major labels, and Capitol Records signed Megadeth for their second album, 1986's Peace Sells...But Who's Buying. It was huge successful, and the band was poised to battle Metallica to be the most popular thrash metal band.
Problems:

Mustaine's behavior was becoming erratic due to drug and alcohol problems. Prior to their third album he fired Poland and Samuelson, who were replaced by guitarist Jeff Young and drummer Chuck Behler. There were several more lineup changes over the years, culminating in the acrimonious exit of original member David Ellefson in 2002.

Injury and Recovery:

In 2002, Mustaine suffered a nerve injury and it was initially thought he may not be able to play guitar again. He used the downtime to remaster Megadeth's previous releases with added bonus material. Luckily he recovered and reformed the band with a new lineup to release 2004's very well received The System Has Failed. Mustaine also put together the Gigantour Festival that Megadeth headlined in the summer of 2005.

Megadeth's success continued with a couple of very successful CDs in United Abominations and Endgame. In 2010 bassist David Ellefson rejoined Megadeth after a contentious exit several years ago.

Essential Megadeth Album:

Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?
Their 1986 sophomore album was a thrash masterpiece. The guitar work is great, and Mustaine's lyrics are dark and twisted.

MR. BIG

Mr. Big
"Mr.Big got their start when William Roland Sheean (Billy) stepped away from David Lee Roth's first post-Van Halen band, after contributing to two albums and numerous major tours. The Buffalo, New York-born bassist had already honed his considerable skills during a decade spent touring with his band, Talas, but with the recruitment of Martin (Eric) in 1988, he knew the foundation for this ultimate musical venture was well in place. Martin (who was born in Long Island, New York, but grew up all over the world as an Army brat) had already ventured into the light, both with melodic rock-oriented Eric Martin Band, and as a more soul-leaning solo artist.

Growing up on U.S. military bases across Europe, the young Martin was introduced to the sounds of Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. Such influences never ceased to define and motivate his musical pursuits - in his three previous albums, and shaping the character of Mr.Big. The group was made complete with talents of guitarist Gilbert and drummer Torpey. Hailing from Pittsburgh, Gilbert was already a well-respected guitarist who had released four highly-touted albums with his Los Angeles-based band, Racer X. Torpey came to California after playing his dues behind the kit in the Arizona rock community. He soon became a much sought-after road horse, touring with a number of high-profile artists, most notably Robert Plant.

Mr Big first broke ground in 1989 with their self-titled Atlantic Records debut, which received extensive radio play with the "Big Love" and "Addicted To That Rush" singles - the latter of which may have prompted labelmates Rush to invite the band on tour. The band returned in 1991 with "LEAN INTO IT", an album that further strengthened their reputation, and, in the process, went RIAA platinum.

The album's "To Be With You" single went #1 in Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Holland, New Zeland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and in the U.S., where the three week chart-topper leapt RIAA gold. Released in 1993, the internationally acclaimed "BUMP AHEAD" garnered solid airplay with the group's deft handling of Cat Stevens' "Wild World." The subsequent tour saw the band opening for Aerosmith during dates across Europe, headlining in front of over 100,000 people at a festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and staging three sold-out shows at Tokyo's famed Budokan arena - complete with a Cheap Trick-inspired encore of "Ain't That A Shame." On "HEY MAN", the group brings forth expert chops, strong voice, and a new-found creative punch into album that reminds listeners exactly what it means rock."

But what happened in 1997?

As Eric Martin said, they needed to stop for a while and be on their own, with their family. In the meanwhile, each member of the band has been busy working on their projects: Eric Martin, published, in 1998, his solo album called "Somewhere in the middle" (Atlantis Records).

Featuring a lot of well known musician (Matt Sorum, Billy Duffy, Steve Lukhater and bandmates Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan for naming a few) Pat "Torpedo" Torpey released, in the same year as Eric, "Odd Man Out", his album, where you can really hear how he greatly sings and write songs; Pat also published his second work called "Y2K" featuring musician like Derek Sherinian and Pat Regan . Both were released only in Japan.

Billy, recorded three albums with Niacin, his critically acclaimed instrumental fusion trio, along with Dennis Chambers and John Novello; The 3 CDs are: "Niacin" dated 1997, "High Bias" 1998, and "Deep" 2000.

On "High Bias" you can hear guests like Pat Torpey, Alex Acu馻 and Chick Corea. "High Bias", with Lukather, has seen the appareance of the great Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple bassist and Black Sabbath lead singer), as the singer. Billy released a live (late 1998) with is old band Talas from their sold out show at Kleinhan's Music Hall in Buffalo, New York. Still in the works are a pair of upcoming Billy Sheehan solo albums: one to be a instrumental bass showcase, the other a more song-oriented rock album with Sheehan handling all vocal parts.

Paul Gilbert started his solo career with "King of Clubs" in 1998 with John Alderete, Bruce Bouillet his friends from RacerX and having Steve Martin (ex singer of RacerX) at the drumkit. This CD also features Pat Torpey.

In 1999 (Mr.Big 10th year's anniversary) the band decided for a reunion, but (sadly) Paul decided not to join back the band, deciding to continue to be a solo musician. "We never wanted to change the band but we didn't know what else to do," says Sheehan. "After a lot of talking between myself, Pat, and Eric, we decided to keep the band going. Once we'd settled that, Richie was the first guy to come to mind." So Richie Kotzen, which has played with Poison and released a few solo albums, joined the band and they released "Get Over It", a more bluesy oriented CD. The song "Superfantastic" has climbed up the top 10 in Japan becoming a great blockbuster single.

In the same times, Paul Gilbert has released "Beehive Live" a live CD recorded in Japan which included songs from "King of Clubs" and some brand new songs. In 1999 Paul has published "Flying Dog" and toured in Japan.

This year he has decided for a Racer X reunion and they recorded "Technical Difficulties" without Bruce Bouillet which is havining health problems with hands (best whishes Bruce!!). PG also released his third solo album called "Alligator Farm" on June 28 in Japan. Now he is planning to record another Racer X album.

SCORPION

Born: 1969

Known best for their 1984 anthem "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and the 1990 ballad "Wind of Change," the German rockers the Scorpions have sold over 22 million records, making them one of the most successful rock bands to ever come out of Continental Europe.

Originally formed in 1969 by Rudolf Schenker, the original lineup consisted of rhythm guitarist/vocalist Schenker, lead guitarist Karl-Heinz Follmer, bassist Lothar_Heimberg, and drummer Wolfgang_Dziony. In 1971, Schenker's younger brother Michael joined the band to play lead guitar and good friend Klaus_Meine became the new vocalist. The group recorded Lonesome_Crow in 1972, which was used as the soundtrack to the German movie Das Kalte Paradies. Although they failed to get into the public's eye, the early formation of '70s rock band UFO noticed Michael_Schenker's guitar playing and hired him as their lead guitarist; Michael, therefore, would leave the band in 1973. Guitarist Uli_Jon_Roth replaced him, and under his guidance the group released four consecutive albums under the RCA record label: Fly to the Rainbow (1974), In_Trance (1975), Virgin_Killer (1976), and Taken by Force (1977). Although these albums failed to attain any serious attention in the United States, they were all quite popular in Japan. By the time Taken by Force was released, Roth made the decision to leave the band and form Electric_Sun after feeling that his musical ideas would take the group in an entirely different direction. Tokyo_Tapes, a double live album that the group recorded in Tokyo with Roth, was released in 1978. Shortly after Roth's departure, Michael_Schenker was kicked out of UFO for his constant alcohol abuse and came back to play with the Scorpions in 1979, who had recently signed with Mercury Records. The group released Lovedrive that same year and played their first American tour, but Lovedrive failed to attract attention, being banned in the United States because of its sexually explicit cover. Still coping with his drugs and alcohol addiction, Michael missed tour dates repeatedly and guitarist Matthias_Jabs was hired to fill in for him on nights when he was absent. Michael eventually would leave the band a second time after realizing that he was failing to meet their expectations.

Now with a lineup of Klaus_Meine on vocals, Rudolf Schenker on rhythm guitar, Matthias_Jabs on lead, Francis_Buchholz on bass, and Herman_Rarebell on drums, the band released Animal_Magnetism in 1980 and embarked on another world tour. Surprisingly, Animal_Magnetism went gold in the United States, and the Scorpions immediately went back into the studio to record their next release. Problems arose, however, and the project was postponed because Meine had lost his voice and would have to have surgery on his vocal chords. Many thought Meine had been fired from the band, and rumors spread that metal singer Don_Dokken had already replaced him. The Scorpions proved these rumors untrue when Meine returned for the 1982 release Blackout, which contained the cult hit "No One Like You." A major success worldwide, Blackout sold over one-million copies in the U.S. alone. But as popular as Blackout was, it was the band's powerful follow-up, Love at First Sting, that succeeded in making them superstars. Released in 1984, the album boasted the MTV single "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and would eventually achieve double-platinum status. The group undertook one of their most successful world tours yet, boasting an outstanding stage show with high-energy performances.

After releasing World_Wide_Live in 1985, the band took a long hiatus and remained uninvolved from the music industry for two years. Their tenth studio album, Savage_Amusement, was finally released in 1988, and the hit ballad "Rhythm of Love" brought on another major success. In 1990, the album Crazy_World was released and would eventually become the Scorpions' biggest-selling record to date, drawing on the strength of the hit ballad "Wind of Change."

Not too surprisingly, Crazy_World was the last successful Scorpions release in the U.S. By the time their Face the Heat album hit the shelves in 1993, many longtime fans had already lost interest in the band, due to the alternative explosion of the early '90s. Face the Heat did eventually reach gold, and in 1995 the band released another live album, Live_Bites. Now with bassist Ralph_Rieckermann and drummer James_Kottak, they released Pure_Instinct in 1996. Mercury Records assembled a double album of the band's greatest hits, Deadly Sting: The Mercury Years, and released it in 1997. Eye II Eye, an album in which the band experimented with pop-techno melodies, was released in the summer of 1999. Moment of Glory, featuring the Berlin_Philharmonic_Orchestra and several revamped versions of Scorpions cult classics, was released in fall 2000. Continuing to be productive into the 21st century, the Scorpions released their fifteenth studio album, Unbreakable, in 2004, followed by the concept album Humanity: Hour 1 in 2007. In 2010 they released their final studio album before retirement, Sting in the Tail. Barry Weber, Rovi
